The 2015 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has a primal, simple bouquet that struggles to get past the honeyed fruit, the aromatics overwhelmed by the growing season. The palate is slightly honeyed on the entry with notes of mango, passion fruit and a touch of spice, suggesting that there might have been some botrytis in the vineyard. This is not unattractive but falls short of other Corton-Charlemagnes of this vintage. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. (DIAM 30 closure)

Tank sample. Fermented and aged 16 months in oak, 30% new. This has depth and intensity – both ripe citrus and well-integrated oak. Almost sweet-tasting in its ripe citrus fruit but with a fine freshness to balance. I suppose it is not a classic burgundy grand cru but it is certainly impressive, powerful and long. (JH)

The 2015 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, under the Domaine du Pavillon label, has a soft, slightly muffled bouquet of apricot blossom, lime and a touch of acacia. The palate is medium-bodied with a viscous opening, moderate weight in the mouth, but it feels a little simplistic towards the linear finish, needs more weight and "gras" character to come through. Let's see how it performs once in bottle.
