Tasting notes
The 2009 Blandy’s Colheita Single Harvest Sercial (2022 Bottling) comes from around 20 hectares remaining on the island. It is burnished straw in colour. The nose is attractive with desiccated orange peel, mandarin and light kerosene aromas. The palate has a potent tang of marmalade on the entry, modest weight with fine balance, even though it needs a tad more complexity towards the finish. Still, I appreciate the nuttiness and oxidative tincture that lingers on the aftertaste. 2,600 bottles produced.

Tasted from a 5-cl mini sample bottle. TA 7.25 g/l, pH 3.3, VA 0.5 g/l, RS 45 g/l. Harvest winemaker and bottling winemaker Francisco Albuquerque. Bottled 2022. 2,600 bottles. Smells savoury, shifting moment by moment from rye breadcrumbs to ripe papaya drenched in freshly squeezed sweet orange. Orange blossom, cool mint, camphor, electric lime, umeboshi plums. Piercingly clean, piercingly linear, piercingly slender – a line of fine bitterness drawn with a smoke-tipped pen along a ruler made of pressed rock. Indescribably elegant. I want to press my bones so deeply into this wine that they become etched with its diamond-tip-sketched fractals. (TC)
