Madeira

Vineyards cling to the steep, volcanic cliffs of the island of Madeira, which belongs to Portugal. The grapes grown here produce its unique fortified wines, which are heated during maturation to “maderise” the wines. Explore Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and Malmsey styles, as well as rare Colheitas.

About Madeira

Sitting in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, this small, Portuguese-owned island sits 700 miles from Lisbon. Its remote location and small population mean it has long had to ship its wines to distant markets. Fortifying the wines helped them to survive long distances. Stored below deck, in the hull of these vessels, the wines were naturally warmed – something producers found improved the wines.
