Tasting notes
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru is deep in colour than its peers. Bold 'n brassy on the nose, this offers plush, toasty, slightly confit-like fruit that bare the hallmarks of a warm summer. Yet it improves considerably with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, dense red fruit with a touch of tarriness and tobacco, grippy on the polished finish. It just needs time. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru includes around 30% whole bunch and is matured in 20% new oak. This has a reserved but detailed bouquet, not as charming as Arlaud’s Chambolles but conveying a wonderful sense of mineralité. The palate is very detailed, with fine tannins that frame the layers of black cherry and raspberry fruit, and segues into a slightly peppery, very harmonious finish. This is wonderfully composed.
