Tasting notes
The structural frame is exceptional. soft tannin, high, and perfectly integrated acidity, lots of finesse and a weightlessness. Fully mature with almost all the primary fruit turning to tertiary complexity, Savoury characteristics, vegetal, earth, mushroom, hints of sweet parsnip, Chinese five spice, animal – a wonderful rendition perfectly formed and framed.

The dark ruby-garnet 2001 Pinot Noir Malans Unique offers an intense yet pure, deep and refined, matured but also flinty bouquet of ripe, sweet red fruits and beautiful autumn aromas a cellared Pinot can display. The palate is silky, fresh and vital, very delicate and, despite its relative lightness, remarkably long and intense, even young. The acidity uplifts the full body here and lends the wine beautiful freshness and mineral grip. The finish is a bit austere. The 2001 might be sleeping at the moment, but the wine is rich and tight enough for a second (or third) life. It's a character in any case. 14% stated alcohol. Tasted from magnum in Zurich, April 2022.
