Drink 2025-2035, Vinfolio, Mar 2022

The 2018 Ségla has fantastic, amplified Margaux-esque aromatics that soar from the glass. Deep magenta in colour, the wine is distinctly red-fruited in character with rich, dark cherry, red plum and cassis fruit all filling the palate. It is texturally plush and powerful with very fine, elegant, integrated tannins that provide impressive depth. The toasted dry spice notes from some quality oak is well integrated with the fruit and the wine has great balance. A vibrancy and freshness help sustain the flavours on a long finish. This is only going to get better.

The 2018 Segla, which was omitted from my in-bottle report, has a rich and opulent nose with sloes, black cherries and violet petal aromas; it's fruit forward and sensual. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins and is slightly granular in texture with underlying salinity, black plum and just a hint of allspice. It is very open and pliant, harmonious with just the right amount of bitterness to beckon you back for another sip. Everything that you really want from a Deuxième Vin.

Tasted blind. A little furry on the nose. Big ripe fruit on entry and then marked acid and tannin. Not graceful but punchy. Sudden finish. (JR)

A terrific, charming second wine, the 2018 Château Rauzan-Segla Segla has plenty of darker currant and cherry fruits as well as leafy herbs and spice, medium-bodied richness, subtle minerality, and a great finish. Drink this high-quality, outstanding second wine over the coming 10-12 years.
