Blood orange, star anise, cinnamon and dark red toned fruit, all waft from the glass in the 2019 La Tâche Grand Cru. There’s plenty of the trademark La Tâche aromatics, but it’s almost as if they are wrapped inside the fruit rather than around it. Here, too, the overall impression is of a Burgundy of power and tremendous overall intensity. Even though the 2019 is so alluring today, I wouldn’t think of opening a bottle anytime soon. The 2019 is a total stunner.

Picked on the afternoon of 16 September, the morning of 17 and all day on 18 with t he young vines only brought in on 14 September. The 50-year-old vines yielded 23 hl/ha and 994 cases. Deep crimson. Rather more savoury than usual on the nose. But on the palate it’s so rich you could so easily drink it tonight! Such a seductive wine… Utterly sensual in terms of ripe fruit and length. Rich and perfumed. Just absolutely what we all seek in a red burgundy: rich fruit and yet delicate. Restores one’s faith in burgundy. (JR)

The 2019 La Tâche Grand Cru is sublime. Mingling aromas of wild berries and bergamot with notions of rose petals, exotic spices, violets, clove and cinnamon, it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a multidimensional palate of breathtaking plenitude. Elegantly muscular, this is a vibrant, pristinely balanced wine that concludes with a long, resonant finish. More structured and broader shouldered than the ethereal Romanée-Conti itself, this will demand and richly reward bottle age.
