The 2010 Gevrey-Chambertin Le Combe Aux Moines fleshes out beautifully in the glass with ripe dark berries, flowers, mint and spices. There is considerable volume and sheer heft in the glass in this dark, imposing Burgundy, but ultimately the Combe Aux Moines is defined by its precise minerality and sheer structure. In other words, this is a wine built for the cellar. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. The biggest news at Domaine Fourrier is Jean-Marie Fourrier’s decision to launch a small negociant operation to augment his estate wines. Readers can look forward to new bottlings from the 1er Cru Aux Exchanges in Chambolle-Musigny and two new Grand Cru wines from Clos de Vougeot and Echezeaux, all of which will debut with the 2011 vintage. As for 2010, Fourrier told me he is down 40% across the board in terms of yields. The cold weather during the flowering produced 100% millerandage (shot berries), which Fourrier described as pea-sized grapes. While that is not good for quantity, it has certainly turned out great for quality. As a quick note, none of the 2010s had been racked at the time of my visit in early December 2011. I have kept scores a bit wider than normal in the few cases where the wines were a touch reduced. Bright medium red. Complex, musky nose melds raspberry, cherry, minerals and wild herbs. Juicier and finer-grained than the Champeaux, currently projecting more Chambolle fruit than Gevrey structure. Pure, sappy, crystalline wine with an explosively long, lightly saline finish of great vibrancy. Still youthfully tight, holding plenty in reserve. This should be a beauty with eight to ten years of bottle age.
Deep crimson. More restrained on the nose than Les Goulots and Champaux which come from so close by. But there is obviously a lot of substance. Really juicy transparent sweet lifted fruit. Should, after a red-currant youth, evolve into something a lot more complex. (JR)

Domaine Fourrier is located in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. The estate has been run by Jean-Marie Fourrier since 1994, and has rapidly become one of the village’s most fashionable names, known for producing pure and transparent Pinot Noir.
