Tasting notes
Deep violet. A complex bouquet evokes spice-accented cherry, dark berry preserves, potpourri and baking spices, joined by a building licorice nuance. Sappy, palate-staining blueberry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors show impressive depth as well as energy. Smoky mineral and black cardamom notes build on an impressively long finish that features mounting tannins and lingering florality.

Based on 100% Grenache that was fermented and aged in amphora and glass jars, the 2017 Priorat Els Escurcons offers a very pretty, elegant, nuanced style to go with lots of wild strawberry fruits and notes of rose petals, spice, violets, and candied orange. With no hard edges, solid underlying tannins, and a great finish, enjoy this perfumed, satisfying Priorat over the coming 8-10 years.
The 2017 Els Escurçons was produced with pure Garnacha that was in full clusters but was crushed, and it matured in glass demijohn. This had just been bottled when I tasted it, and the wine was tight and a little reductive. So, an energetic decanting might be a good idea if you plan to open this anytime soon. I like the energy here, and there is tension and fine-grained tannins. It needs time. 3,000 bottles produced.
