The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is very backward on the nose and lactic in style, maybe picked a little later than its peers. But, it does seems to cohere in the glass and develop a pleasing florality. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, judiciously-applied oak, commendable depth of fruit and insistent grip on the fresh and pleasingly saline finish. There is a completeness to this Charmes-Chambertin that will stand it in good stead for long-term aging. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Slightly riper yet still agreeably fresh aromas offers up compote-like aromas of red and dark currant, baked plum and the hallmark sauvage whiffs. The caressing yet powerful flavors also possess good size, weight and mid-palate density, all wrapped in a serious, very firm and youthfully austere finale. Like several wines in the range, this will need to develop more depth, but the potential is here if it is allowed to develop over time. (91-94)/2034+

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a straightforward, focused bouquet with brambly red fruit, briary and tea leaf aromas, though it just lacks the assertiveness and intensity you seek from a Grand Cru. The palate is better with a light spiced opening, good weight and cohesion with black pepper and sea salt infused red fruit. Quite Mazoyères in terms of structure towards the finish, this will benefit from 4-6 years in bottle.
