Score 99/100 · Drink 2014-2043, Matthew Luczy, Wine Advocate, Mar 2025

The 2018 Viñedo Chadwick is a spectacular wine from front to back, opening with a refined, poised and perfumed nose that seamlessly combines floral-herbal and toasted dark-fruited aromas with ever-increasing complexity. The palate is svelte and seamless, exuding a perfectly textured polish with a rich yet composed intensity. It explodes into a long, layered, paradoxically energetic and yet slow-moving finish, remaining perfectly focused while expanding horizontally and vertically with an ultra-refined, impeccable tannin structure. The combination of the obvious exactitude that goes into this wine and the outstanding nature of this vintage have made a bona fide modern classic. The blend is 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petit Verdot, aged for 22 months in 80% new barrels and 20% foudre.

The 2018 Viñedo Chadwick is a wine made during a perfect year in which a wet winter was followed by a mild spring and similarly mild harvest period. Considered one of the great vintages in Chile, the balance and intensity achieved in Puente Alto DO offers one of the best versions for the last 20 years: a combination of the ideal climate with gravel soils defined a perfect maturity for Cabernet Sauvignon. Viñedo Chadwick, with a 3% dash of Petit Verdot, was 80% aged in new French barrels and the rest in foudres for 22 months. It is garnet red with a purple sheen in the glass. It has a complex nose of herbs, blackcurrant, sour cherry and licorice over a bed of blackberry, cedar and orange petit fours. Broad but smooth, it develops good juiciness and depth with balanced flavor and tension while the richness and acidity combine harmoniously with the 13.5% alcohol.

97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot. A perfect growing season – rains during the winter, mild spring temperatures, warming through the summer and to the end of the season giving optimal ripeness and perfect health in the vines at harvest. Deep purple colour. All cassis on the nose, revealing some toasty oak and graphite with air. The palate has a fleshy, succulent texture that allows the rich black fruit at the core to shine. Seamless, with plump blueberry and blackcurrant fruit but good acidity to keep everything in check. Sweet oak moves the fresher currant fruit to cassis again, making it hedonistic and sweet on the finish at this stage. It should settle and have a long drinking window once everything knits together. (TP)
