Revisited from bottle, Rousseau's 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is a rich, demonstrative wine, bursting from the glass with aromas of raspberries and cherries mingled with raw cocoa, orange rind, peonies and hints of cedary oak. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and textural, with uncommon mid-palate weight and imposing reserves of ripe fruit, it's structured around powdery tannins and succulent acids. This is carrying unusual puppy fat, yet it retains the domaine's stylistic signatures and promises to age with grace.

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a fragrant bouquet of raspberry and veins of blue fruit, gaining intensity with time. The palate is well balanced with light tannins but plenty of fruit and just a touch of pepperiness on the finish.

80% of parcels are in the clayey soils east of the village but the blend also includes Les Estournelles and Clos Prieur. Once their little patch of Craipillot is ready (grandma’s former potager), that will also be included. Destemmed – they just throw some stems into the tank to help with drainage. The smaller berries often hold on to their juice until the grapes are pressed so the wine may not be bone dry when it is put in barrel. Barrel sample. A little darker fruited than the Clos du Château but still explosive in fruit. A touch of vanilla sweetness on the nose. Creamy and chewy, sweet but fresh, darker and more dense than the Clos. Just a touch of peppery spice to add another layer. Finishes with dry tannic finesse, more stony. Long. (JH)
