Lauer says this represents the point at which botrytis comes into play, but even so only a bit of it, with most of the fruit having been healthy, albeit overripe. Interestingly, as Lauer himself points out, whereas his Fass 7 and Fass 23 Spätlesen were characterized by “exaggeratedly ripe and exotic fruit,” this Auslese projects a “cooler,” more northerly orchard fruit personality dominated by apple, pear and white peach. Yet there is also a slightly syrupy impression of gloss and pronounced sweetness. Zest of candied grapefruit peel, chew of apple skin and piquancy of pear seed lend sorely needed stimulation to the lingering finish. I hope this will display more interest and allure with time, though certainly it gives pleasure already.

The plethora of stone fruit, from loquat to mirabelle plums to nectarines to pluots is staggering. This is no doubt a resolute riesling with a hefty serving of sweetness and a muscular yet tightly wrapped-up texture. Lots of length and plummy intensity on the finish, but the acidity holds firm on the mouthwatering aftertaste. Drink now or hold.

The 2018 Kupp Auslese Fass 10 is beautifully clear, fresh and flinty on the concentrated, citrus/grapefruit-scented nose of ripe apples, apricots and quinces. The nose is very clear and even floral. On the palate, this is a generous, lush and refined Auslese with remarkable finesse and clarity. The finish is stimulatingly salty and piquant, revealing great purity and beautiful balance. This is another highly digestible and persistently salty Auslese. Tasted in June 2019.

Tank sample. Tangy sweet-sour, citrus aroma. Creamy and sweet on the palate, like lemon chunks. Rich but not fat. Generous orange and apricot flavours on the palate. Moderate length. (JH)
