Score 88-90/100 · Drink 2020-2030, Neal Martin, Jan 2019

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Chabiots 1er Cru comes from vines planted in 1997. It has a well-defined bouquet of brambly red fruit laced with lavender and rose petal aromas. The palate is well balanced and, being completely de-stemmed, shows an engaging fruité on the candied finish. Probably more for short-term enjoyment than Lignier’s other Premier Crus.

From purchased grapes, the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chabiots wafts from the glass with a pretty bouquet of raspberries, rose petal, currant leaf and orange rind. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, supple and expansive, with melting tannins and a succulent core of fruit, concluding with a fragrant, saline finish.

Barrel sample. Three barrels. 30% new oak. Bought-in grapes. Not made in 2016 because frosted. Above Les Amoureuses. Scented and pretty on the nose, smells like tiny little cherries, sweet and tangy. Super-fine, dry tannins on the palate, very delicate but persistent. And a lovely fresh finish. (JH)
