63% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec. Darkest crimson. Inviting, gentle aroma of blackcurrant leaf. Dry finesse in the tannins, which are polished and give an attractive dry finish to the rich but not sweet fruit. Dark-chocolate finish. Flattering and deep. You could approach it now but only with food. (JH)

A blend of 63% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec, the 2016 Te Kahu Gimblett Gravels Vineyard features hints of tobacco ash on the nose, along with plenty of plummy, almost blueberry-like fruit. Cedar and vanilla slot quietly into the backdrop of this medium-bodied wine, folding into the silky texture and emerging mostly on the supple finish.
The 2016 Te Kahu has a feisty verging on volatile bouquet that is trying way too hard to impress. The palate is hard and dry, bereft of adequate fruit and with far too much astringency on the finish. Disappointing.
