Smoky and a hint of struck match. Very herbal and still a little reductive on the palate but the deep citrus and green fruit fill out the core. Wild and delicious with terrific intensity and green-fruited freshness on the finish. Dog Point has its detractors for its extreme style, especially when the wines are young, but I find it a fascinating wine that constantly changes in the glass and needs to be given an evening – or taste it again 24 or 48 hours after opening. There are other wines made in a similar way (wild ferment, high solids, barrels, etc.) that are not as distinctive as this so it is hard not to conclude that the character of the wine is as much to do with site as with winemaking. Produced from 100% Sauvignon Blanc and made in a style that’s built to age, the 2010 Section 94 offers aromas of ripe peach, passion fruit and struck flint with a whiff of crushed stones. Medium-bodied, crisp and superbly flavorsome in the mouth, it offers layers of stone fruit and yeasty flavors with racy acid and a long finish. Approachable now, it should cellar to 2017+. Slightly reduced aromas and flavors of yellow peach, plum, soft citrus fruits and spices. Very concentrated and densely packed, with strong acidity giving tension to the middle palate. Has the sheer intensity to support its vanillin oak component. Finishes impressively long but a bit reduced. Ironically, this was the most reduced sauvignon in a long flight of bottles I tasted one day, and it was the only one that was sealed with a cork.
