The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Village, around 60% from La Justice and 40% from Croix de Champs, feels a little muted on the nose at first, displaying touches of red cherries, peony and rose petal, the 40% to 50% stems lending earthiness. The compact palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and a minerally finish that just needs to develop more precision (like the Nuits Saint-Georges.)

From Croix des Champs east of the RN74 and from La Justice. Wrong side of the road, supposedly. But good viticulture compensates for that, suggests Haisma. 20% new oak. 40–50% whole bunch but a little less than normal as the stalks were more crunchy. 2018 is his 10th harvest in Croix des Champs. Tank sample. Mid cherry red. Sweet little wild berries and a herby cedar note from the stems – not intrusive. Velvet texture and cool, dry finish. Mouth-watering. (JH)
