A burst of mocha gives way to sweet cherry and plum sauce, tobacco and hints of fresh mint as the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Millecento blossoms in the glass. There’s a sense of opulence here, yet also refinement, as a textural wave of ripe red fruits laced with saline-minerals rushes across the palate, taking on a sweet herbal twang toward the close. It finishes with a coating of fine tannins and sour citrus underpinnings, while tart wild berries and hints of exotic spice fade. This has years to go. In 2012, only 6,000 bottles of the Riserva Millecento were produced, as opposed to an average of 15,000. It was matured in a large, but new, 30-hectoliter cask.

The Castiglion del Bosco 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Millecento offers toasted notes of espresso and roasted nut in a first aromatic wave. After that, you get dark, plump fruit with candied cherry and crème de cassis. Those rich flavors are tied tightly together at the core, resulting in balance and unity. This wine is made according to criteria that emphasizes both richness and smoothness.
This '1100' (Millecento) wine is based on selected parcels of their oldest vines in the high, marl-rich Capanna vineyard at 400 m. The wine was aged for 36 months in large French casks. Deep ruby. Edgy, lively with lots of refreshing acidity. Very Sangiovese. Impressively long. (JR)
