(Brouin says the team was especially fond of the new oak barrels of grand cru juice in '03 and thus declassified 12 used barrels into this wine shortly before the bottling) Good full red. Nose like a liqueur of cherry, lifted by baking spices. Superripe, fat and round, with the liqueur-like fruit complicated by spices and earth. In fact, this bottling shows stronger soil tones than the fruit-driven 2004. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins.

Produced from declassified Clos des Lambrays (50% of the final assemblage) and two premier cru vineyards, La Riotte and the little known Le Village, the 2003 Morey-St.-Denis Les Loups is the finest I’ve tasted from Domaine des Lambrays. It displays black raspberry, plum, blackberry, and boldly spicy aromas. On the palate, this medium to full-bodied wine is ample, satin-textured, and reveals gorgeous depth as well as richness. Chocolate-covered blackberries are intermingled with spices, asphalt, and black raspberries in its ripe, structured, persistent character. Projected maturity: 2009-2017. Good full red. Tangy aromas of raspberry, brown spices, pepper, roasted herbs and loam. Tighter and less sweet in the middle than the village wine, but with better acidity and spine. Shows a bit more berry character, along with roasted herbs, brown spices and underbrush. Just a tad dry on the back, but finer, longer and fresher than the village example, with more pronounced minerality. This is a small cuvee in 2003, as almost all of the Clos des Lambrays juice went into the estate's grand cru bottling.

Quite raw fruit on the nose, then sweetness. Very, very chewy. Lots of sweet substance. Tannins very insistent. (JR)
