Tasting notes
The 2017 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru is noticeably pale in color. It has a voluminous, powerful nose with quite a generous slab of new oak, but there is plenty of fruit behind it, ready to absorb it with bottle age. The palate is fresh on the entry with vibrant acidity, and more malic than its peers, then taut and linear, with a vein of sour lemon mixed with spice toward the very persistent finish. Très Perrières. This deserves several years in a cool, damp cellar. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

Another of the highlights of this tasting is the 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières, a terrific wine that bursts with reductive aromas of citrus zest, crisp Anjou pear, white flowers, iodine and struck flint. Medium- to full-bodied, satiny and layered, it's deep, cool and pure, with racy structuring acids, chalky extract and a long, electric finish.
Barrel sample. Here again the style is ripe fruit, a little like sour apricots and a touch of cedary oak. Full flavoured with a strong contrast between ripeness and acidity. Flavourful rather than elegant. I personally prefer the Charmes. (JH)
Bright medium yellow. Reticent aromas of peach, apple and spices; this wine finished its malo early and appears to be going through a slightly tired phase today. Dense, sappy and salty but hard to taste, with its savory and spicy qualities currently dominating its fruit. Best today on the dusty, tactile, rising finish, where the minerality of this premier cru comes through clearly. But this wine needs more élevage to reveal its inherent class. (13.5% natural alcohol with a pH of 3.25)
