The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvée des Alouettes offers up lovely aromas of red plums, rose petals and candied peel that mingle with incipient savory nuances of grilled squab and forest floor. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and incisive, with excellent concentration, fine-grained and chalky tannins, and above all a bright, vibrant quality that lends this Morey fabulous definition. It will need some time, as it's much more tight-knit than the Morey village.

(from high-altitude vines in the climat Monts Luisants; this wine had only recently finished its malo but had not yet been sulfured): Good deep red. Superripe aromas of black cherry, licorice, spices and crushed rock. A very rich, ripe wine with an almost chocolatey high-toned character leavened by saline minerality; this is carrying 14% alcohol and it shows. But still quite tight in the middle and in need of a racking. Finishes with firm tannins and a vestigial note of malic acidity.

About the producer
Domaine Ponsot is one of the most well-known estates in the Côte de Nuits, famed for owning three of the original four hectares of the Clos de la Roche Grand Cru. The legendary domaine also produces another nine Grand Cru cuvées.
