Brought up all in new barrels, the 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes from Serafin is a beauty that shows the elegant style of the vintage. Coming from old vines (50-90 years in age) and clay/limestone soils, this ruby-colored 2014 gives up a terrific perfume of ripe strawberries, cherries, and spice, with just a kiss of green herbs adding complexity and depth. With bright acidity, beautiful balance, and a seamless texture that just glides over the palate, it’s already approachable yet is going to keep for 10-15 years.

Matured in 100% new oak, the 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes has a tightly wound, redcurrant and blackcurrant bouquet that actually reminded me of Sylvie Esmonin's Gevrey Vieilles Vignes down the road. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a little hardness on the entry, leading to a chalky finish that feels a little overwhelmed by the oak.

Dark medium red. Expressive nose melds dark berries, violet, mocha and licorice. Juicier and oakier than the basic village wine (this was aged in 100% new oak, vs. 60% for the last); broad and sweet but I prefer the balance of the first Gevrey. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and very good length.

(this wine is aging in 100% new oak, as are all of the Sérafin crus): More saturated ruby-red than the basic village offering, Deeper on the nose as well, offering musky aromas of raspberry and game. More reticent in the mouth, with saline minerality currently keeping the wine's fruit under wraps. As much red fruit as black in style, with the gamey quality carrying through on the palate; a wilder blueberry note emerged with air. Firmly structured village wine with good energy and juiciness.
