The 2016 Berliquet has a more straightlaced yet well-defined bouquet: dark berry fruit, bay leaf and light incense aromas, nicely defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with edgier tannins and fine acidity, drier than its peers but with decent structure on the menthol-tinged finish. Not long and just a tad over-extracted, but this is focused and has a judicious pepperiness on the aftertaste. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

The 2016 Berliquet has quite a high-toned bouquet that gradually gains more composure with aeration, the cedar- and mint-infused red fruit developing subtle tertiary aromas with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firm but fine-boned tannins. This leans toward the drier and more classically styled Saint-Émilion, and it pulls it off well. Very promising. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
Nicolas Thienpont’s last vintage at this estate before it was bought by Ch Canon. Tasted blind. Complex, unforced, with real freshness and interest. Peacock’s tail finish. (JR)
About the producer
The Chanel group – owners of Ch. Rauzan-Ségla and Ch. Canon – added Berliquet to their stable of wine estates in 2017. Since then, the team – led by Nicolas Audebert – has been transforming the property, gradually revealing this special Saint-Emilion site’s potential.
