Score 86/100 · Drink 2017-2024, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Mar 2016

San Polino's 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is a disjointed wine with ripe notes of blackberry preserves and cherry marmalade that give weight and heaviness to the bouquet. There are also some notes of bruised apple or candied peach that come out of left field. This wine does not have the ethereal elegance and grace that you expect from Brunello. It feels heavy footed instead. In the mouth, this Brunello shows high astringency that may not fully integrate with time. San Polino is an organic grower.

Tasted blind. Dark, almost impenetrable ruby. Exotic cherry and dried fruit nose. Firm, crunchy tannins frame ripe strawberry fruit. Lovely richness, yet not heavy. Grows on you. (WS)

A 2011 with plenty of ripe fruit and spices. Chocolate-covered-cherry character too. Lovely pure fruit here. Full-bodied, chewy, round and savory. Better in 2018. Feb 2016, www.jamessuckling.com
