The beautifully aged 2015 Kastanienbusch Riesling GG is intense golden-yellow in color and has dense, intense yet elegant Riesling fruit with classic terroir spice and a salty note. On the palate, it is elegant and supple but remains delicate and extremely fresh thanks to its citrusy freshness and very long, dense, complex, salty and spicy finish. The 2015 has well-hidden power and is a great Kastanienbusch! Tasted at the Rebholz Kastanienbusch/Christmann Idig/Wittmann Morstein vertical tasting in Westhofen in August 2024.

Smoky notes mingle with scents of fresh lime and ripe white peach, and a firm palate delivers stimulating pit piquancy and an ash-like undertone along with restrained but satisfyingly juicy fruit. A tart tang of crab apple adds to the invigoration of a superbly sustained, chalk- and peat-tinged, vibrantly interactive finish. “For me,” remarked Rebholz, “this is a bit more concentrated and perhaps has greater potential than the other two Grosse Gewächse, although those are perhaps more open now and easier to understand.”

Sleek, rather compelling perfume. Lots of juicy, slightly rustic, fruit. Very edgy and slightly awkward. (JR)

The 2015 Birkweiler Kastanienbusch Riesling trocken GG shows a very pure and complex, almost dusty and wet clay bouquet with herbal flavors. Round, piquant and very elegant on the palate, this is another Mosel-like Riesling from the Southern Pfalz. It is lean but juicy, precise, concentrated and very complex in the finish. Already accessible, but with a long and tension-filled finish, this is a very expressive Riesling with grip and character. Highly recommended. Jul 2016, www.robertparker.com, Drink: 2025-2035
