Score 90/100 · Drink 2013-2019, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Oct 2008

The 2004 Barolo Cannubi (aged in French oak) is made in a rich, dense style that aims for concentration as opposed to an expression of this historic vineyard's unique qualities. The wine offers up an array of chocolate, spices and plums, with outstanding balance. Although the tannins are well-integrated, they aren't as refined as one might hope in this vintage.

Deep red with ruby tones. Aromas of marzipan, brown spices, dried rose and truffle. Suave and sweet, with a liqueur-like ripeness to the flavors of red fruits, marzipan, brown spices, menthol and leather. Nicely integrated acidity accentuates the wine's inner-mouth perfume and contributes to an impression of firm structure. Tannins are fairly tough but ripe. (The other two 2004 samples I tasted from this estate struck me as rather dry for the vintage; I will withhold judgment on these wines until I have the chance to retaste them.)
