Tasting notes
This is smoky and chalky from the nose right through to its polished, opulent-yet-juicy, soothingly sustained finish. There is admirably pure appley fruit to complement prominent mineral elements but, for now at least, not the diversity that characterizes the corresponding Kabinett and Spätlese trocken. The fruit for this was botrytis-free and barely higher in potential alcohol than that which informed the Spätlese, but nonetheless, as the flavors demonstrate, was in a very different state of phenolic evolution. I would not be surprised to witness significant differentiation emerging with bottle maturation.

The 2014 Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Auslese Trocken shows a bright, fresh and pure fruit aroma of great finesse and terroir expression. Full-bodied, tightly woven and full of grip, this is an exciting wine full of tension, vitality and limestone expression. This is a very promising wine for the next 15-20 years. The Auslese won't be in the markets before September 2016.
