Tasting notes
(Fourrier made this special cuvée by having ten harvesters pick fruit from the oldest vines with the tallest and biggest trunks from the middle to the top of the vineyard; just two barrels were made from very tiny berries that yielded the equivalent of less than 20 hectoliters per hectare): Healthy dark red. Brooding aromas of dark fruits, licorice and violet. Incredibly plush, sweet and thick but without any obvious weightiness. Explosive dark berry fruit is complicated and energized by saline minerality. Delivers an uncanny combination of lushness, cut and black-fruit intensity and finishes with outstanding palate-staining persistence. Fourrier was worried that if he made more than two barrels of this juice, he'd risk compromising his "regular" Clos Saint-Jacques. An extraordinary wine in the making.

The 2014 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St Jacques Cuvée Centenaire 1er Cru is picked by 12 harvesters who zone in on the oldest part of vineyard -- over 100-year-old vines, to be precise. It is only the second time it has been made apart from the 2010. Deep in color, it has a very intense bouquet, the fruit darker than the regular Clos Saint Jacques with hints of oyster shell and wilted violet petals. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin but what makes this different is the structure and the density of this wine. It is very powerful but so elegant on the finish, though it will clearly need several years in bottle before you even dream of opening it. Two barrels produced - good luck finding it.
Vines planted 1900/01. They made it in 2010 as well. Just two barrels. 10 pickers go in the day before the regular picking. Picking only the oldest vines from the middle to the top of the vineyard, smallest berries. Most will go to Hong Kong. Deep blueish crimson. Dense and vibrant nose. Real concentration with real density of fruit and tannin. (JR)
