(vinified with 80% whole clusters): Healthy dark red. Sexy aromas of spices, dried flowers, smoky minerality, iron, game and earth. Like liquid velvet in the mouth; voluptuous but not heavy thanks to the lift provided by the stems. Finishes with slowly building length and a perfumed note of licorice pastille. The tannins are substantial but arrive late. This complex, soil-driven Clos Vougeot offers outstanding potential.
The 2014 Clos de Vougeot La Petit Maupertuis has an earthy, somehow autumnal bouquet, not leafy, but is evokes aromas that come from below the soles of your shoes -- something subterranean even. The palate is rounded on the entry with good density, firm tannin and weigh. This is the one wine I feel is just a little heavy and as a result, it is just missing some finesse on the finish.
