Tasted at the Comte Liger-Belair vertical at the Château de Vosne. The 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Aux Cras is still showing a little new oak on the nose and needs to shrug off a little reduction, but underneath lies some very pure black cherry and blueberry fruit interlaced with minerals. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of chewiness on the entry, good depth and cohesion, clamming up toward the finish that suggests it will require several years in bottle. This is very fine. Tasted June 2015.

Good deep red. Cassis, black cherry, dark plum and crushed stone on the sappy, high-pitched nose. Dense and thick but energetic as well, offering captivating inner-mouth perfume to the black fruit, violet, spice and licorice flavors. Shows a medicinal reserve and a youthful roughness to its tannins on the long, spicy back end. These vines were planted in 1921 and 1923 on a limestone-rich hillside. Owing partly to the tiny berries here, the production in 2013 was just 18.5 hectoliters per hectare, according to Liger-Belair.

The 2013 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Cras has a seductive, almost Vosne-Romanée-like bouquet with impressive delineation and focus. There is a lovel of confit scent that emerges with time. The fruit is very pure with silky smooth tannins and a gourmand-like, marmalade-tinged finish that has great persistence. Intriguing...in a positive sense.

Crimson. Very deep purple. Quite meaty and dense with some real opulence. Very flashy and attention grabbing. Clean dry neat finish. Still not fleshy. But very clean and lively. Race and pace and excellent length. (JR)
