Fattoria dei Barbi has created a lovely Riserva. The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva exhibits power and grace. The quality of the fruit is evident and the bouquet opens to dark cherry, pressed rose, cola, balsam herb and spicy tobacco. Those aromas faithfully underline the best qualities to be found in aged Sangiovese. At the back, the wine shows firm, but finely textured tannins and a bright vein of crisp acidity.

The wilder, gamier side of Sangiovese comes through in the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. Powerful, burly tannins confirm that first impression. Dark cherry, tobacco, game, smoke and licorice are some of the notes that fill out the wine's frame. There is good overall balance and plenty of nuance, even if a level of finesse that might elevate the Riserva is not to be found, at least not today. Among other things, the rough tannins attenuate the finish.
Attractive perfumes of dried fruit, flowers and cedar that follow through to a full body, ultra-fine tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Tight and racy. Very polished. Better in 2018 when it opens a little but already so rewarding to taste. Oct 2015, JamesSuckling.com
