Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Charmes-Chambertin 2011 from Serafin has a perfumed, floral bouquet with rose petals infusing the vibrant redcurrant and cranberry scents. The palate is nicely balanced with ripe tannins and a silver thread of acidity, offering a gentle crescendo toward the structured finish that should see this Charmes-Chambertin age better than many. This is a well-crafted grand cru that needs 3 or 4 years to show its full potential.

Moderately saturated medium red. High-pitched, spicy aromas of red berries, rose petal and blood orange. Juicy, sappy and intense, communicating a restrained sweetness to the brisk flavors of red fruits and crushed rock. Youthfully imploded but not dry. With its terrific pungent lift, fine-grained tannins and superb length, this grand cru really leaves the taste buds vibrating. Serafin's 2011s are not particularly fleshy wines but they boast lovely pinot tang.

Sweet and punchy and again just a little lacking in purity. (JR)

Good saturated dark red. Sexy aromas of dark berries, smoke and minerals. Lush and sweet on the palate, with an intriguing musky quality to the highly concentrated blackberry, game and mineral flavors. Really silky and seamless but with terrific spine. Finishes sappy and very long. A very stylish wine of great charm, this has the balance to give early pleasure but should really be laid down for a minimum of five or six years.
