The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Estournelles Saint-Jacques 1er Cru was served blind by Pierre Duroché following our tasting of 2019s. It has an attractive leafy bouquet with tertiary aromas, fresh and fully mature. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite austere in the mouth but pleasantly chalky toward the finish. A bit rustic compared to subsequent, more finely tuned vintages, but thoroughly enjoyable all the same. Drink now or keep for another 8–10 years. Tasted at the domaine.

The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint-Jacques was popped open by Pierre Duroché after I had tasted through his 2015s. You could argue that they were a difficult act to follow, nevertheless it confirmed my previous encounters that this is a superb Gevrey-Chambertin. Here it has an attractive bouquet with dark berry fruit, early grey and shucked oyster shell aromas, the latter not as conspicuous as it was a few months ago. The palate is medium-bodied with red berry fruit on the entry mixed with orange rind and a splash of soy. It has become spicier and feels fleshy and caressing on the sweet finish, still with a hint of dried fig. Just wonderful. Tasted September 2016.
