This is a little closed today but is clean, lifted and there is that tell-tale Cannubi fruit on the nose. This follows in the mouth with a definite silky edge. Tightly wound again and the finish is delightfully savoury. There is a lot of weight here. A big wine. Very good.

From a warmer vintage and a shorter growing season, the 2011 Barolo Cannubi is, indeed, a more compact and succulent expression of Nebbiolo. This native grape of Piedmont likes the slow, longer seasons best, and wines made in vintages like 2011 stand out for their accessibility and fruit-driven exuberance. The bouquet here awards bright cherry and blackberry with leather and spice. This wine is best for near and medium-term drinking.
Barolo. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Savoury nose that is still a little locked on the fruit. Bags of cherry fruit on the palate and then vigorously tannic. Still unsettled and quite demanding in both concentration and tannic load, but will develop nicely. (WS)
Lustrous garnet. Light nose but promises hidden depths. Great charm with impressive structure. Excellent finish – peacock’s tail. Something baked but not tired about this. Very clean finish, despite the alcohol. (JR)
