Good medium red with a faint amber edge. Deeper-pitched on the nose than the '14, but with a lovely rose petal high note to lift its musky aromas of red cherry, raspberry and earth. Very rich, chewy, powerful wine with superb subtle sweetness to its sappy flavors of red fruits, orange zest, mocha, minerals, spices and soil. Finishes with substantial tannins that avoid dryness. This powerfully structured wine will require at least another five years for its spine of acidity to harmonize fully with its considerable flesh. A splendid wine of terroir but be patient! (13.1% alcohol; 3.5 pH; 40 hl/h; harvested on September 22)

The 2012 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is more sulky on the nose compared to the Echézeaux, though eventually it unfolds with red plum and cranberry jus, cold stone and scents of fern. The palate is medium-bodied with fine supple tannin, beautifully interwoven new oak. This is a structured Clos Vougeot with strict tannin, quite linear in style with a pinch of spice on the broody, almost introspective finish. This is a cerebral Clos de Vougeot...and there's not too many of those about.

Moderately saturated medium red. Sappy, pungent aromas of dark cherry and crushed-stone minerality. Wonderfully dense and sappy but youthfully clenched, with piquant spicy lift and powerful saline minerality currently keeping the wine's fruit component under wraps. Displayed increasing richness with aeration but this firmly tannic, extremely long Clos Vougeot is painfully backward today. I would not be at all surprised if this wine merited an even higher score at its apogee.

Bright medium red. Noble perfume of tangy raspberry, flowers, mint and crushed rock. Densely packed and juicy, with terrific depth to its electric flavors of raspberry, minerals and mint. Clearly the best wine in the cellar in 2012, with a hidden dimension the other wines are not suggesting today. But not even this wine is austere. Finishes with suave, spreading tannins and lovely echoing juicy persistence.
