Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Clos de Vougeot 2011 from Jacques Prieur articulates a modern style of winemaking compared to others in the Clos Vougeot flight, boasting ripe dark cherry and blackcurrant fruit that is pleasant if not particularly terroir-driven. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe tannins, firm structure but blocky toward the rugged finish that suggests that it was pushed in the winery.

Deep crimson. Determinedly concentrated – lots of extraction? Very solid and robust though without much subtlety. Chewy finish. May well fall into place but for the moment it seem a little raw. (JR)

(bottled last, at the end of June of 2013): Bright, full red. Reticent aromas of bitter chocolate and flowers. Juicy, peppery and tight; showing plenty of spicy, earthy density but very closed today. The big, chewy tannins arrive early, cutting off the wine's fruit. Finishes with attractive floral lift but this wine really needs seven or eight years of cellaring.

Moderately saturated bright, full red. Pure, complex nose offers scents of black cherry, redcurrant, crushed stone, menthol, mint and spices, along with a pronounced floral quality. An attractive soil-driven midweight, showing more savory spices than primary fruit in the mouth today and a thickness that comes from the clay-based soil. Finishes with a salty element and building tannins that dust the entire palate. Less sweet than the last few wines, and in need of further elevage. Gublin noted that this grand cru probably will not be bottled until June.
