A now fully mature nose displays ripe, gamy and very earthy dark pinot fruit aromas trimmed in just enough spice wisps to mention. There is still fine vibracy to the mouth coating, dellneated and nicely and concentrated medium weight plus flavors that display plenty of power and a certain textured quality on the firm, persistent and slightly austere back end. For my taste this has reached its apogee though it should continue to hold there for at least another decade.

The 2002 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is a wine that I have not tasted since it was bottled. Here it is noticeably deep in colour. It is bestowed with a fragrant bouquet of red berry fruit, tangerine, freshly tilled soil and a touch of mushroom, all very elegant and refined. Conversely, the palate is quite stocky and dense, firm and grippy. A Clos Vougeot determined to make an impression but lacking the finesse one would have expected. Fortunately it does improve in the glass and I suspect that had I left it another hour it would have meliorated further. Decanting is advised. Tasted blind at Philippe's Xmas lunch.

Seems rather light after the Damoy Chambertin! Lots of acid and tannin and very solid. Will come right in the end but it's still embryonic. (JR)

This was a bit stolid and chunky, made in the period when Etienne Grivot seemed to be going for density at all costs. The finish was distinctly dusty.
