Tasting notes
Tasted at the Comte Liger-Belair vertical at the Château de Vosne. The 2012 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes has a fragrant, refined bouquet with perfumed red cherry and fresh strawberry fruit, a hint of orange zest developing in the glass just behind. The palate is medium-bodied with an edgy opening. The acidity is nicely lifted here lending it a more citrus-like veneer than its peers, pointed and sharp on the finish with a long, long sustain. Excellent. Tasted June 2015.

A wine of gorgeous contrasts, the 2012 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes is powerful and intense, but also miraculously light on its feet, as only fine Burgundy can be. That theme is evident throughout, as the 2012 presents striking translucence in its fruit yet it is also very much tightly wound and in need of time in bottle to fully come together. There is so much going on in the glass, it's hard to know where to start. One thing is certain, this is a superb wine from Louis-Michel Liger-Belair.
(vinified with 15% whole clusters): Sexy stony minerality and a floral nuance lift aromas of raspberry and smoky herbs. A step up in detail and energy from the foregoing samples, showing very good definition to its raspberry and smoky mineral flavors. Totally different in texture from the preceding samples owing to the stem influence, not to mention the limestone content of the soil. Finishes savory, spicy and long, with a lot of personality.
The 2012 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes is wonderfully soft, textured and layered in the glass. Dark red cherry, plum, cinnamon and rose petal all grace the palate. Fine, silky tannins give the 2012 much of its supple, resonant personality. A deep, textured finish shaped by these clay-rich soils rounds things out beautifully. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off the Chaumes. Today it is firing on all cylinders.
