The Poggio di Sotto 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva exhibits rosemary essence and hints of medicinal herb. The tannins are on the dry side, and the wine does not have the same tension or inner freshness that we see in some of the other bottles in this retrospective. I get flavors of tea leaf, chamomile and dark plum. To the palate, the tannins are chalky and there is some tartness too.

Dark red cherries, plums, exotic spices, menthol and hard candy emerge from the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. Racy, perfumed and sweet, the 2008 boasts lovely length and finesse. Here, too, the volatile acidity is a a bit intrusive, at least today.

Maturing mid ruby with a pale orange rim. Very lifted and peppery and a little stinging on the nose. Wonderful crunchy tannins and lift, but fruit seems a little subdued. (WS)

I am quite enamored of the 2008 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva that boasts beautiful floral notes that are both rare and precious. At the back of those feminine, somewhat ethereal tones are grounded aromas of spice, crushed terracotta and balsam herb. This wine impresses for the direct and pristine perspective it offers on the grape, that is already showing tiny steps toward tertiary complexity. The wine is at a very interesting point in its drinking window right now, and will continue its careful evolutionary course with a few more years of bottle rest. Drink: 2017-2028.
