Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Echézeaux Grand Cru from Domaine Gros Frère & Soeur has a very odd nose with strong fennel and black pudding notes on the nose that suggests too much oak. The palate has way too much oak, very chocolaty and dry on the finish. I just do not understand this within the context of the vineyard.

Sweet spices, dried flowers, rose petals, mint and licorice all meld together in the 2012 Echezeaux. This is the roundest and most polished of the four Grand Crus in the range. Silky tannins support the succulent, resonant finish. The Echezeaux should start drinking well a few years after release.

This is a sound, cleanly-made, deep ruby-colored wine displaying dusty, loamy soil and cherry notes as well as a short finish.Robert Parker, Wine Advocate # 182

The wood treatment is prominent if not dominant as the spicy aromas of cassis, anise and hoisin are able to be appreciated. There is good richness to the bigger and more powerful medium-bodied flavors that possess both good volume and punch on the lingering and mouth coating finish where the oak influence resurfaces. The supporting tannins are ripe and about the only nit is the hint of backend warmth. This should be approachable young if desired. Tasted: Jan 15, 2014. Drink: 2020+
