Tasting notes
Mortet's 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru is another wine endowed with considerable early appeal. Dark red berries, flowers, spices, mint and licorice all flesh out on the finish in an impeccable, layered Burgundy loaded with personality. The 2011 is rich, open and incredibly inviting, even at this early stage.

The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru has a lifted vivacious bouquet with small, dark cherries and raspberry fruit bolstered by the 80% new oak and the 30% whole-cluster fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp, refined entry. There is wonderful purity here and it builds in the mouth towards a succulent, well-defined finish adorned with subtle peppery notes on the aftertaste. This is very fine. Drink 2015-2028. Importer: Martine's Wines, Novato, CA; tel. (415) 883-0400 and Fields Morris & Verdin, Justerini & Brooks, Berry Brothers & Rudd all in the UK.
(60% new oak; from vines in Petit Chapelle, Cherbaudes, Bel-Air and Chaponnets): Bright medium red. Wild, musky aromas and flavors of redcurrant, mocha, spices and underbrush. Sweet and intense, with nicely integrated acidity giving shape to the velvety mid-palate. Ultimately a bit youthfully imploded on the back end, finishing with a saline nuance, ripe but firm tannins and excellent sneaky length.
The whole clusters are evident as the spice and floral elements are quite pronounced though they do not completely dominate the otherwise cool and pure red berry fruit liqueur suffused nose that is again trimmed in gentle wood. There is a racy intensity to the overtly minerally flavors that possess a lovely natural sweetness that helps to buffer the otherwise youthfully austere, clean and balanced finish. Good stuff that exhibits only mild rusticity. Tasted: Jan 15, 2014. Drink: 2019+
