(production here was just 25 hectoliters per hectare due to losses from hail, according to Pernot): Bright light yellow. Lovely Puligny aromas and flavors of peach, pear, vanilla, noble herbs and white flowers. Sappy and dense, conveying a strong impression of dry extract even if it's not yet especially fleshy; as chewy as a solid but boasts excellent cut and energy. Finishes tight and quite dry, with a hint of spiced apple.

(aged in 35% new barriques, like the Bienvenue, the rest one and two years old): Pure aromas of lemon ice, musky white peach and herbs. Tactile, pliant and juicy, with lovely give and lift to the flavors of peach, apple and mint. This really saturates the palate with flavor. The Bienvenue is more refined and seductive today, while this is more powerful and backward.

This isn't quite as aromatically refined as the Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet but it's even more complex with its spicy nose of white orchard fruit, acacia blossom, citrus peel and soft sandalwood hints. There is more volume and slightly better concentration to the sleekly muscular flavors that possess a beguiling mouth feel to the caressing, intense and beautifully well-balanced finish. This is really a lovely example of Bâtard and unlike many vintages of this wine, it is one that should be relatively accessible young yet repay 7 to 9 years of cellar time too. Tasted: Jun 15, 2014. Drink: 2019+
