(the yield here was just 11 hectoliters per hectare owing to an attack of caterpillars) Medium red. Expressive aromas of jammy berries, chocolate and coffee; much more evolved than the Poisets. Sweet, dense and full, with a slightly pruney aspect. Best today on the finish, which features chewy tannins and decent vibrancy. I suspect this will be better in two years than it is today.

Produced from paltry yields of 9 hectoliters per hectare, the 2003 Vosne-Romanee Les Chaumes is a big, medium-bodied, structured wine. Concentrated and deep, its red and black cherry-dominated character is jam-packed with ripe tannin that will require cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015. Ruby-red. Aromas of black fruits, violet and espresso. Sweet, penetrating flavors of dark berries and bitter chocolate. The spring attack of caterpillars was partly responsible for the tiny crop here in 2003. Finishes with ripe but strong tannins that grew more obvious as the wine opened in the glass. Very much a wine from thick-skinned grapes.
