Broad, big and glycerous with a sweet almost caramel side to the fruit. Full-bodied and tannic, with more than enough weight of fruit to complete the picture. This is quite backward at this stage though there is enormous potential here.

Bright, deep red. Initially explosive aromas and flavors of cherry, menthol, incense and spices subsided in favor of blueberry, crushed stone and peppermint tea: very Bonnes-Mares! Wonderfully silky and scented in the mouth, displaying very good breadth but a light touch. Finishes with a broad, fine dusting of tannins and excellent length and lift. A compellingly perfumed and pure wine: am I greedy for wanting the flesh and sweetness of a warmer year?

(racked in late September): Good full red. Highly nuanced nose combines blueberry, licorice, pepper, spices and wild herbs, along with an almost medicinal pungency characteristic of this grand cru. Utterly primary on the palate, with uncompromising dryness to the flavors of black fruits and crushed rock. Tannic and youthfully tough today, but this is still recovering from the racking.

A moderately toasty nose fights somewhat with the spicy plum, cassis, warm earth and game suffused aromas. There is a plush mouth feel to the big-bodied and muscular flavors that display a discreet minerality before terminating in a firm, vibrant and quite serious finish. This extremely rich effort seems more forward than it is thanks to the abundance of tannin buffering dry extract so patience will be required. Tasted: Apr 15, 2013. Drink: 2023+
