The 1993 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a really beautiful bouquet, wonderful definition here, degraded red berry fruit, clove, pressed flowers and a touch of leather. This is very complex and endearing. The palate is medium-bodied, fully mature but fresh, tart red cherry, soy and a touch of brine, just drying out towards the finish. Here, I much prefer the aromatics than the palate that just seems a little static. Tasted at the Domaine.

Groffier's better wines were unquestionably successful in 1993. The aggressively spicy, vanillin, and oak-scented Bonnes Mares possesses the most tannin of the recommended Groffier offerings. It is medium to full-bodied, with nearly outstanding fruit extraction, good structure, and a mineral, wet stone-like component that runs through the wine's aromas and flavors. Give it 4-5 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 15. For the first time since I have been tasting Groffier's wines, he decided to bottle them without fining or filtration.
