The 2001 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is showing some maturation, with distinct bricking on the rim that is wider than I would have expected. The nose is soft and light, with scents of tomato vine and redcurrant. The palate is balanced with a fine bead of acidity, backward at first and taking time to find a sense of harmony. It displays moderate depth, but frankly, it does not rank along side Frederic’s recent triumphs. A worthy Bonnes-Mares, but not a truly great one. Tasted November 2013.

Very sleek and savoury with a hint of compost. Polished with the tannins well in retreat. (JR)
Medium red, a bit less bright than the Fuees. Aromas of maraschino cherry, mocha, chocolate, herbs and underbrush. Supple and plump, with notes of iron, mocha and underbrush. Boasts very good volume and breadth for the year but could use more sweetness. Finishes with fine, dusty tannins and good but not outstanding length. Or is this just going into a shell?
(racked two weeks prior to my visit) Full medium red. Cool, classic Bonnes-Mares aromas of blackberry, stone, brown spices, mulch, smoke and fresh herbs. Pure, penetrating and precise, but quite tight, even a tad dry, today. Shows its density on the pure but austere back end, which features strong soil tones of minerals and earth.
