This bottle of 1962 La Tâche Grand Cru came directly from the Domaine's cellar, brought by Aubert de Villaine himself. Do you want to know what perfection is like? Walk this way. The bouquet is ineffably complex and more intense than the 1962 Grands-Échézeaux tasted alongside, deeply laden with red fruit, touches of mint, wild fennel and a light scent of church pew. It is quite mercurial, developing even more intensity with aeration. The palate is multi-dimensional from the start, with perfect balance and filigree tannins that frame its pure, mineral-driven fruit. The La Tâche exerts a gentle but insistent grip on the finish as if to say, “You’re not going yet, are you?” Perfect. Tasted at the 1962 dinner in Burgundy.

This particular bottle of the 1962 La Tâche Grand Cru, one of the monumental Burgundies of the 20th century, had a relatively low fill, but its only journey had been from Vosne-Romanée to Dijon, which may explain why it showed so well. Wafting from the glass with aromas of hoisin sauce, licorice, smoked black tea, orange rind, rose petals and plums, it's medium to full-bodied, suave and seamless, with pristine balance, incredible intensity of flavor without weight and an unerring sense of harmony. This silence-inspiring wine has to be tasted to be believed.
The 1962 La Tâche from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti was superb. I could have gone home at this point and been utterly thrilled. Sweet spices, licorice and soft, subtle fruit came together in an incredibly appealing Burgundy of the highest level.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti or simply “DRC” is without doubt the most famous domaine in Burgundy and one of the most famous producers on earth. The Grand Cru vineyard from which it takes its name produces the world’s most expensive wine by a long margin.
