Based on perfectly ripe and healthy grapes from the top parcel of the cru and internally communicated as "best fuder," the golden-colored 2003 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese opens with a rich and buttery, slightly caramelly but still fine and elegant, slightly flinty nose. Round, fresh and even filigreed, with piquant acidity giving drive and rhythm, this is a rich and voluptuous Treppchen Auslese from the infamously hot and dry vintage that turned the cards to a new era. The finish is remarkably crystalline and even stimulating due to the finessed freshness. Natural cork. Tasted from AP 05 04 in November 2021. 1,200 bottles are still available.

This comes from one of the remaining parcels of old vines in Treppchen and significantly outperformed the other Treppchen wines at Loosen this year. Lime, pineapple, distilled herbal essences and a hint of tangerine zest in the nose. Juicy and bright, with a soothing, sorbet-like texture and sense of sweetness. Nut oils, citrus fruits, vanilla cream and smoky minerality in the finish. 1 star.
Very, very fine, taut, sleek, green-leafy flavours. Real perfume on this! Very racy. Quite flinty – almost Sauvignon Blanc-like. Lovely, open, ripe fruit on the palate entry. More obviously an Auslese than the Wehlener Sonnenuhr. (JR)
