Tasting notes
From forty year-old vines in the prime “des Dessus” section bordering Grands-Echezeaux, Trembaly’s 2005 Echezeaux displays aromas of cooked ginger, black currant, rhubarb, wood smoke, as well as caramel and toast (from the two of three barrels here that are new). Glycerine-rich and sweetly-fruited in the mouth though preserving both a tart and a caramelized edge, this finishes with roasted meatiness, smoldering, toasty smokiness, and fruit liqueur intensity, but not the purity, precision, or nuance of the best Trembley wines. I would happily make allowances for its having been in bottle only two weeks, although I’m not sure I detect any characteristics I would trace to sulfuring or bottle shock. Cécile Tremblay is improving year after year and the Echezeaux 2014 is a delight to taste. The nose offer af lovely selection of Vosne spices, and a deep an pure red and dark berry fruit. On the palate very juicy fruit – transparent with a very fine definition – its long, and intense yet very elegant. My expectations are high .. and they were fullfilled as I think the detail and focus of this wine is bettter than the previous vintages .. and this wine is slowly but surely moving into the top league Echezeauxs. Well done – but more importantly a delight. Mar 2016, www.winehog.org, Drink: 2026+
Firm reduction dominates the nose. Otherwise there is lovely verve and freshness to the incredibly rich and enveloping medium-bodied flavors that also completely coat the palate with sappy dry extract, all wrapped in a dusty, intense, tight and very seriously finish that delivers sneaky good length. This isn't quite as complex as the Chapelle, at least not yet, though it may very well match it in time. This too is seriously good. Jan 2016, www.burghound.com, Drink: 2029+
(from 50-year-old vines):Good dark red; not as lucid as the Chapelle. The nose shows a strong musky, meaty reduction, with aromas of dark raspberry, violet and mocha emerging with some aeration. Sweet, smooth, plush and fine-grained, offering impressive volume without any undue weight. Finishes suavely tannic, seamless and very long. Tremblay reiterated that she would wait until June or July to bottle her top 2014s. Superb potential here. Jan 2016, www.vinous.com
