Transparent ruby red with a pale rim. I think this is a second bottle but it’s a bit too vegy/gamey/animal for me on the nose and too tart on the very pinched palate. Dried out/oxidised on the end. ‘It’s an ‘08’, says Louis-Michel. (JR)

The 2008 Echézeaux Grand Cru was tasted from two bottles, the first much too evolved. The second is still a little advanced with savoury aromas, dried blood and singed leather that slightly mask the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, simple for a Grand Cru with a light and unexciting finish. Superior vintages followed this rather vexing Echézeaux.

Tasted at the Comte Liger-Belair vertical at the Château de Vosne. The 2008 Echézeaux Grand Cru is the first great Echézeaux under Louis-Michel Liger-Belair. Tasted twice in recent weeks, there is wondrous delineation and poise on the nose, real mineralité and sophistication. The palate is taut and crisp on the entry with blood orange, maraschino and marmalade that fans out in confident fashion on the vital finish. What a superb Echézeaux - it even shadows the 2009! The first great Echézeaux under Louis-Michel. Tasted June 2015.

A wine of considerable inner tension, the 2008 Liger-Belair Échézeaux (magnum) presents a compelling dynamic of push and pull between all of the elements that are alive in the glass. Floral, savory aromatics meld into a core of intensely perfumed, powerful fruit, all supported by veins of underlying salinity that add cut. A deep, dense, powerful wine, the 2008 Échézeaux is utterly sublime in so many ways. This is another drop-dead gorgeous beauty from Louis-Michel Liger-Belair. 95
